As many of you know, LEEONALEWIS (notice the two e\'s), flagged the Jonas Brothers Video Burnin\' Up as inappropriate so many times, it was deleted. She/He recently said that they we’re going to get S.O.S. deleted next, and then they were going to try to hack “jonasbrothersmusic” channel. So all of you JONAS FANS sign this petition to get her deleted off of Youtube for good.

Dear Senator and Mrs. Obama;

We jazz musicians of New York City are really hopeful and excited about your upcoming presidency. Many of the names on this list are around your own age or older and some younger. You represent to us many of the principles for which we have devoted our lives; building cross-cultural bridges, promoting peace and harmonic dialogue, operating at high levels of creative teamwork, mentoring and sharing our knowledge and experience to empower younger ones with musical skills and a range of self-esteem and creative expression, for the greater good.

But the unique and incredible legacy of jazz is rapidly becoming an endangered species. This wonderful art form, loved and valued by many other countries, other than our own, may become extinct.

Our opportunities to perform in live events have been drastically diminished in recent years. We have been outsourced by D.J.’s, pirated recordings and privately funded arts organizations. We are scarcely to be found in schools and universities, other than in the impermanent teaching artist or adjunct capacities.

The situation is dreadful.

To see our esteemed elder statesmen of jazz suffering economically, is a moral and cultural outrage. After creating this music, unique and revered in all the world, and risking everything, life and limb, in the life-threatening racial climate that they came up in, to be unable to afford simple amenities, not to mention adequate housing and healthcare, is a travesty. Meanwhile, we who are honoured to follow in their footsteps, cannot afford health benefits and have fewer and fewer opportunities to play and to educate, with any security and benefits for our futures. Many of us have families to support, while others cannot even contemplate having a family, because of the lack of employment opportunities necessary, to contribute to a family’s sustenance.

Many of our greatest jazz heroes have perished, long before they should have, due to lack of health benefits and economic insolvency.

We have 2 proposals for your thoughtful consideration:

1. Create tax incentives for all event owner/managers; i.e. club, concert, hospital, schools, etc. plus individuals planning weddings, parties, etc. who use live musicians for their event! Just as we hope that our responsible and compassionate new administration will establish tax breaks for responsibly ‘green’ manufacturers in order to encourage the conservation of precious fuel resources, we feel that a tax incentive for live music will help to grow and preserve precious cultural resources; namely, America’s national treasure; JAZZ!

2. Many jazz musicians are forced to choose between the creative life of a performing and composing artist and giving all that up to teach full-time (if we can possibly find one of those rare positions) or do other jobs.

Our solution is this:

Establish permanent part-time teaching positions in schools and universities for musicians, with health and pension benefits.

Some full-time positions with benefits do exist in schools and universities, but they are very few. When funding for arts education was drastically cut in the 80’s and 90’s, we saw the widespread growth of private arts organizations that sent teaching artists out to schools.

The teaching artist was a good “band-aid” solution at the time, but now we are experiencing the serious downsides. A residency of teaching artists in a school can bolster interest and inspiration for students and teachers in the short-term, but there is no ongoing relationship and development of musical skills.

Once the residency ends, the teaching artists are gone and funding is often sporadic, so continuity is never established. This sort of “hit and run” approach to teaching in the arts is perpetuating the “instant gratification” nature of our digital society. Kids don’t get to know that irreplaceable sense of self-esteem and confidence that comes from learning an instrument or studying voice! The rewards come slowly; through struggle, practice, then the well-earned gratification of mastering skills on an instrument or composing a song, with the guidance and mentorship of a music teacher. Not to mention, the community building and teamwork skills that grow in any ongoing musical ensemble, band, chorus or orchestra.

The life of a teaching artist is as impermanent and insecure as the life of a performing musician.

We who have devoted our lives to loving, learning and sharing this music, deserve to have a modicum of dignity and support. Permanent part-time teaching positions with benefits, would enable us to empower others through jazz education with this precious American treasure, and to continue performing and composing and to enjoy a healthy, stable and creative life style.

We are appealing to your astute sense of justice, wisdom and love of jazz!

It was announced yesterday that in addition to the "Best of the Colbert Report" DVD released in November of 2007, a second DVD called "A Colbert Christmas" will be released near the end of this year. This will presumably feature a Christmas special, and there can be no doubt that it will be excellant. If this DVD does well, Comedy Central will soon have a unique marketing opportunity for a second "Best of" DVD. After the 2008 election, there will be many new segments that were not featured on the first DVD, most notably the Huckabee feud, Stephen\'s run for president, and his sure-to-be-sharp convention and election night coverage. Such a "Volume 2" release would be sure to do well, and many fans, mysef among them, would really like to see it!
