Karen and Richard Carpenter were the dawn of a new era that had been preceded by the Viet Nam war, domestic discord among the hippie generation, and a musical sound that expressed political turmoil worldwide. With their sweet harmonic sound and lush orchestrations, the Carpenters were a carefully crafted pop phenomenon hailed by then President Richard Nixon as, ''young America at its best!'' The incredible instrument of Karen Carpenter's rich alto range, and the impeccable musical delivery from both siblings, were the genesis by which the Carpenter’s found their way to the top of the musical charts. During their reign as pop superstars, it was considered by "hipsters" to label the group as "bubble-gum" music.
