http://www.petitionspot.com/petitions/Self_Protection/ Last week saw the publication of two articles in two mainsteam newspapers that both suggested a relaxation in firearms laws in the UK. In my opinion, this debate has been a long time coming. For many years, the data has suggested that gun crime has continued to increase, almost exponentially. Official Home office statistics show a 500% increase in gun crime, and a 200% increase in firearms related fatalities. So clearly, the laws upon firearms are too liberal at the moment correct? The answer is of course, No. Our country has come of the harshest firearms laws in the world. Law abiding citizens cannot own firearms for the purpose of self defence, let alone strictly regulated target shooting. The current laws were a series of so called "knee-jerk" laws, levied because of two massacres involving firearms. The first was Hungerford, as a result of which almost all rifles were banned (now only single shot and .22 rifles in semi automatic are legal). The second was Dunblane, which resulted in the blanket ban of all handguns. Now consider this- if you were being attacked, would you rather have a handgun on your person, ready to be deployed in order to protect your human rights? Or would you rather the government banned all firearms, and stuck to the notion that the police will be around to constantly protect you? It only takes moments of a criminals time to end your life. and i doubt very much whether the police can protect you in such situations. In summary, i invite you to sign this petition in order to attempt to enact change in society, to shift the balance of power from the criminals to the law abiding citizens!
