Even though it was long overdue, we salute the current government of Bangladesh for their willingness and initiatives in getting the job done! However, Bangladesh now faces a new logistical challenge. From the network risk prospective, SEA-ME-WE4 is a single-point of failure which can take the entire nation down as she becomes dependent on it’s virtues. This is why it is absolutely vital for Bangladesh government to take pre-emptive steps to get onboard with the Asia-America Gateway (AAG) consortium. The AAG consortium represents a new undersea cable infrastructure that will provide Bangladesh with the ability to mitigate the single-point-of-failure risks associated with the SEA-ME-WE4 cable infrastructure. The AAG cable will connect Asia to the US from Malaysia to Hong Kong, the Philippines, Guam, Hawaii and the US. It’s branches will also connect Singapore, Thailand, Brunei and Vietnam. Surely, there is a great deal of costs and loans to be assumed if Bangladesh is to become a member of the AAG consortium. However, it is critical that Bangladesh government makes such investment now for a brighter and fruitful future for the entire nation. Our neighboring country, India, has earned world’s respect in the area of custom software development and Information Technology (IT) services by investing heavily in IT education and flexible IT policies that welcome foreign investments. We cannot duplicate India’s overwhelming success in IT overnight but we can surely learn from them today. A great deal of India’s IT infrastructure was practically paid for by the foreign investments that found it very attractive in the late 90s to deal with the infamous Year 2000 bug. Since then India has made significant progress of its own in the broad spectrum of IT services and now commands world’s attention in all areas of IT. All this was made possible because of good decisions by the government of India and the people of India around the globe. By ensuring fast, reliable and redundant connectivity to the world’s Information Super Highway, Bangladesh can avail herself to the infinite opportunities that the rest of the modern world, including India, enjoys today. We urge the government of Bangladesh to seriously review and sincerely consider the AAG membership opportunity before it is too late and engage appropriate resources to explore it to the fullest degree and make public the findings and final analysis via all public mediums including the Internet.
