Only the first 3 episodes have aired in the UK, but I have ordered the DVD from the States and watched the first season up to episode 9. It is, put simply, the best TV show ever made. The characters are all so complex and varied, and the show reveals details so gradually it keeps you totally hooked. Plus, everything is so subtle - details are hidden that you have to really try to notice, for example in the pilot you see at different times among the scattered luggage around the island a pair of handcuffs, a guitar and a wheelchair, which as Im sure you know are all significant later on. However, after seeing the trailer for season 2 I am afraid that Lost will fall prey to corporation greed - that is to say the story will not finish when it should for the best creative and narrative finish - it will stretch oooon and oooon just because it is hugely popular and raking in the cash for ABC. While the story is ingenious enough to last for a while keeping people in suspense, if it is forced to keep going past its due then the stories will get evermore stretched and less well thought out, eventually succumbing to Simpson syndrome (ran out of ideas). They need to be rescued eventually, and there are only so many things that can happen on a tropical island, even with all the detail behind the character interactions. Lost is strong enough to go for 2, possibly 3 seasons at a stretch, but after that the story needs to wrap up, because with no good ideas people will lose interest, and its better to go out witha bang than to slowly fade away. It's Hollywood, it's commercialism, its profiteering at its worst. And it's not even being subtle about it. It's not clever, it's not challenging or thought-provoking, and it's certainly not satisfying entertainment (just remember how you feel at the end of yet another ep that asks more questions than it answers...).
