Petition Against MB18 at the Holyoke Mall

Taking effect September 9th of this year, the Holyoke Mall will be enforcing a policy known as MB18. This policy will require visitors under the age of 18 to be accompanied by parents or guardians on Friday and Saturday nights, from 4 pm until closing.
There will be security officers posted at every door to check id's of persons appearing to be under 18. If they are willing to do this, why not set up an identification system for those under 18. You could apply for one that will allow you to go to the mall once or twice a week. A 3 strike rule can be adopted, that if you are warned 3 times, your id card will be confiscated. It could cost $5.00 for a new id so that the mall can have some benefits. Its said that it is a few causing the problems, but its rising. So if we deal with the few now, it won't have to be spoiled for all.
This policy is also set up so that teenagers can still shop at stores with exterior entrances. Is this fair business opportunity for the stores that do not have outside access. Many of the interior stores are geared toward growing adults and their profits might dwindle.
Does this mean that if my mom brought me to the mall, she has to hold my hand along the way and go into every store with me? I will end up walking to a store my mom has no interest in, and the mall security will get me and tell my mom to come to the other side of the mall. Would your mom or you (as a parent) want to be hassled? If you were our age, would you agree?
Another problem i see with this policy is how its limiting my opportunity to purchase items at the mall. I, like many other highschool students, take part in many activities during the week, such as sports, afterschool activities, jobs of our own, and many of us have substantial amounts of homework. I tend to go to the mall once or twice a week, and its usually on a Friday or Saturday. They are the only days that many of us have time to go.
Mall workers under 18 are exempt from this policy. Does it make sence that if we are old enough to work alongside adults, often much older than us, that we cannot shop or spend our cash as equally as they do?
Mayor Michael J. Sullivan says that he "hopes it will inspire young teens to spend more time with their parents" and take advantage of recreational activities made available by the city. Teenagers, for the most part, are adventurous. They want to get out with their friends. You can't make someone spend more time with their parents if they didn't want to in the first place. As for the activities, although his speech may have been geared towards Holyoke, I do not see many activities put forth by the city. It seems that there are less and less available. My parents, along with many other adults I know, talk of the many things they did as children and always talk of how us "kids" these days have nothing to do. Well, for us, the mall was somewhere to go, and now that option has been taken away.
The mall is somewhere to go shop, and maybe have some chit chat about current events. It keeps many teens occupied so that theyre not sitting at home or causing trouble out on the streets. Like it is said, "idle hands are the devil's tools."
If you agree with any of the points I have made, please sign this. Even if you dissagree with one thing, give your opinion in the comments. Please take this seriously, because I have not written this petition just for fun.

And if you sign this, please no swearing, or any obscene comments.

Thank You.

I used to love hanging out at the mall as a teen. My first date was at the mall - and we didnt do anything worse than make out in the mall theatre.
Good luck kids. I'm rooting for you.

Too many kids are judged by the mistakes of a few. Many are capable of going and spending time appropriately in places like the mall.

Kids please, don't lose your creditbility by negative language and crude remarks, give your reasons why! Your voice should be heard, make it strong with reason, not rudeness. It will go much farther

this rule sucks i mean i dont go to the mall to swear and do stff like that. A lot of 30 year olds swear in the malls are u going to kick them out 2? not all teens are bad only a few are like that i think they should deal with the individuals instead of banning all of usfrom the mall.

In a high school, a bell will ring and everyone will go away from school to have a Friday night hangout at the mall. But they will have to go somewhere other than the mall for no reason at all. I disagree with rule. There is a rule that makes teens not be able to have a fun time at the mall on Friday night, Saturday night, or Sunday night. Limiting teenagerâs rights so they canât have a good time at the mall on Friday night is pointless. If I wanted to cause trouble, I could do it in the day time, or at night. I would still be making trouble. It makes no sense in my and hopefully many others opinions.

As Kirsten Dunst said in 1982 â ... Those are the people who keep paying, and like, there really arenât other things for teen-agers to do -- especially when you live in certain places. There's the movie theater, there's the mall, and that's pretty much it.â But our social interactions are spoiled because of the weekend limits at the malls. Teens shouldn't have the parent guardian rule 4 pm until closing because the mall is a place to hangout with friends and keep out of trouble. Also, itâs a place where we can just relax and not worry about school that we know is coming on Monday.

This mayor is an idiot. I've worked in a mall for a year, and the vast majority of consumers are kids ages 12-20. I don't know where the heck the kids come up with the money, but there has even been documentaries on tv about how this is the most affluent generation. You take away a teens right to go to the mall, the mall is going to be severely affected. Word of mouth is also a really good form of advertising, and if the teens aren't able to go to the mall, how are they supposed to tell their friends about the great deals going on in a store?
If you are old enough to drive at 16 (don't know where Holyoke is but here driving is 16)then honestly you should be considered old enough to wander the mall premises.
I think that the mall staff, although it is a good idea, will really really regret implementing this. Not only will it hinder business, but it will cause the youth to wander out into the streets. I don't know the size of that city, but honestly from the sounds of things, it seems like there's not much to do. The mall, even when I was young, was always a hang out spot.

thats the point of mall security, to keep the mall secure, i think its an easy out, instead of just dealing with the problem. i think under 16, should be banned, but eightteen is a serious stretch. Furthermore, none of the people signing this petition have any idea what they are signing. its a petition to allow people eightten and under into the mall on weekends. Just an fyi.
