Release House Bill 170 for a vote.

Dear Senator Adams please release House Bill 170 for a vote.

For years Sussex County Council districting gave western councilmen an unfair advantage over eastern Sussex.

For instance, district lines permit two councilmen to come from Laurel and one from Greenwood, thereby giving them three out of five votes.

In fact, voter data reveals that in the 2004 election, at least 67% of the county resided east of U. S. Route 113--not west.

With numbers like that in 2004, eastern Sussex should now have 4 council representatives, but still has only two.

Furthermore, the 5th district is drawn to encapsulate nearly all of the desirable waterfront land, giving all those voters just one council vote. This results in frequent four to one losses -- against the interests of the coastal voters including the people of Milton and Georgetown.

The Delaware House of Representatives passed bi-partisan House Bill 170, by a 34-4 margin to add two AT-LARGE members to Sussex County Council this year.

The bill does not guarantee eastern Sussex adequate representation; it only gives them a chance at it. They deserve far more consideration than that.

The bill is in Senator Thurman Adams' executive committee.

Dear Senator Adams please release the bill for a vote.

The state of Delaware must act before its most important natural resources, its land and waterways, are lost to overdevelopment. Democracy demands that this bill be put to a vote.
