Here is another case of students thinking they know someone else's job better than the incumbant. Are you kidding me? Being a student doesn't make you an expert on how to teach. Maybe she is handing out worksheets so she can save herself from hypertension and a possible heart attack. I supppose your class is a model class, full of eager and reasonable students. I'm so sure she gives you detention for asking for help. Grow up, whiny bitch.

I support this petition because i had a teacher named Mrs. Walker give me inschool suspension for telling her i had to "deficate" after she asked me what i had been doing in the bathroom. Kill them all.

First of all, Mrs. Winton, you need to step back and listen to the students and what they are really saying. They want to be taught and this lady is not doing her job. You shouldn't have such a knee-jerk reaction when students have a legitimate complaint. My husband, who is a high school math teacher, wouldn't put down children who really want to learn like you did. They said they pleaded with her rationally, but only got detentions. Plus, this woman said she would only teach what is required and no more. What kind of teacher is that? If you have that kind of attitude you need to find a new profession. It's teachers like her that soured me on learning until I went back to college late in life. Hey, kids, keep up the good work. Don't let a sour puss teacher ruin your lives like they did me. Keep fighting for your right to learn. It will make a diffrence in your life. Math taught right can be fun, exciting, and valuable. More vauleable than gold! Once you know math, you know how the whole world works.

I'm a high school teacher, and can feel your pain. I see many students who have had teachers like the one you describe, and they come to me with no ability to do those basic skills. She is hurting you, and it's not right. You can got to your principal or PTA and try to have something done. Math builds, and if you don't know order of operations, etc, you will be screwed for years.

Wow! Where do I start. I'm a teacher who taught junior high English for 3 years. I currently teach high school English.

In defense of a fellow teacher, I'd like to point out that sometimes a little compliance goes a long way.

Perhaps active listening in class would benefit everyone, including Mrs. Walker.

If her students would practice active listening, then the day's lessons might go more smoothly and might be more easily understood.

If the day's lesson went well, then Mrs. Walker might have time at the end of class to answer questions without getting frustrated by smart alec remarks or rolling eyes.

It's a win-win situation.

May I ask: Is Mrs. Walker an "older" teacher? If so, back in the day "older" teachers were encouraged to empower their students to learn on their own. So, in her eyes, it's actually a privilege to be turned loose and allowed to explore or discover. It's an expression of intellectual freedom.

What I think I'm hearing you and your classmates say is: "No! We don't want intellectual independence that is monitored by someone who can help us and facilitate our learning. We want someone who can do the learning for us. That way we won't really have to think very hard."

Certfied teacher who doesn't want to teach! Typical! Become a self-employed mathematician! Sounds like you're learning on your own, with no real teacher there!
