Slaveowners would get a lifetime of labor, and slaves would get a lifetime of room and board. Nobody would be forced to be a slave for any reason, and there would be a long, government administered process to ensure that slaves understand the risks and rewards of permanent enslavement. But if, after such a process, individuals still want to become chattel slaves, who is harmed? I think there should be 5 different trial periods with each one being longer than the last. Maybe a week, then a month, then maybe 3 months, then 6 months, and then for 1 year. During these periods the volunter (slave) would not be able to leave. After the final trial period of a year then the person could leave or sign himself (or herself) for a lifetime. The lifetime contract should not be able to be broken.
