We ask that our local officials recognize that 2,400 square feet to service the tens of thousands of dog owners in the West Village, Hudson Square, SOHO, Chelsea and Tribeca areas is just not enough. We call for immediate safety improvements at the existing Leroy Street Run which includes a gate that opens in only to prevent dogs from pushing it open, a temporary shade structure, a better, more sanitary water feature, safer benches (the space at the front has broken far too many paws), and padding on the concrete retaining wall (several dogs have received concussions slamming into these walls and some are now brain damaged). We call for a additional space in the vicinity of the Leroy Dog Run with all-dog and small dog areas and required community input of design and safety features and an additional space in the northern part of CB2 or the north West Village to better service the spill over from Chelsea and the Meat Packing District area. It is important that safe, sanitary dog runs be constructed wherever and be of adequate size to accommodate the dogs of New York. There needs to be separate small dog runs so that the small dogs do not feel threatened by the larger dogs. The larger dogs also need room to run and play.
